To be honest, it's been recorded my fellow Polo (PY tour-manager) while I stayed at the hotel replying mail or something like that, but he did a very good job indeed, capturing a full religious ceremony (including ritual drumming), part of another, the sound of votive coin offerings and some other stuff...<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBMWnR4iZQg_ZhpFbaQOvLnp0u7jJ6BO4H4gKLaWfrOmg9tZk-i03vVhW5qk6qnRQ9bftfGaHvtuOfCt8JUCjuw9t7QMdAiBTwYi5wh66JRwLx9QYLaGMbhGvahy0JK6Z2KmF21qyEPDIp/s1600/polo+records.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBMWnR4iZQg_ZhpFbaQOvLnp0u7jJ6BO4H4gKLaWfrOmg9tZk-i03vVhW5qk6qnRQ9bftfGaHvtuOfCt8JUCjuw9t7QMdAiBTwYi5wh66JRwLx9QYLaGMbhGvahy0JK6Z2KmF21qyEPDIp/s400/polo+records.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521385069138779698" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">no, that's not me, that's Polo, I told you, stoopid</span><br /><br />Being no specialist of shintoism, I can't tell you much about the ritual aspects that are sonically depicted here ; but anyway, that's probably the most interesting batch of documents I got from Japan.<br /><a href="http://punishyourself.free.fr/fieldrecordingsjapan/asakusa_temple"><br />http://punishyourself.free.fr/fieldrecordingsjapan/asakusa_temple</a> .wav files<br /><a href="http://punishyourself.free.fr/fieldrecordingsjapan/asakusa_temple/asakusatemple.rar">http://punishyourself.free.fr/fieldrecordingsjapan/asakusa_temple/asakusatemple.rar</a> mp3 archive<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxtwiAnndnoFLdIFH7yIYWKaRgdknXs3tYN6HCVjZVZEhu1xEPa5IyiIfxFgNGNL2JT8N1O2LcRWOOA0XAJ-Ihe3cNmf0w-cvLELknmf0ERRdwNGR9b9IRAvq9E_PTYfaM5-iqNE8jX7C_/s1600/temple.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxtwiAnndnoFLdIFH7yIYWKaRgdknXs3tYN6HCVjZVZEhu1xEPa5IyiIfxFgNGNL2JT8N1O2LcRWOOA0XAJ-Ihe3cNmf0w-cvLELknmf0ERRdwNGR9b9IRAvq9E_PTYfaM5-iqNE8jX7C_/s400/temple.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521379044363001154" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Last day in Japan... I entered the club just in time to see members of all the bands who had played previously (I missed the gigs) performing a quite chaotic jam session... I captured two songs out of this, can't say if these are covers or what, or exactly who played what ; but J-Rock amateurs could be interested...<br /><br /><a href="http://punishyourself.free.fr/fieldrecordingsjapan/jamsessionshibuyaredroom.mp3">http://punishyourself.free.fr/fieldrecordingsjapan/jamsessionshibuyaredroom.mp3</a><br /><br />(I was two songs later invited to perform "I wanna be your dog" with Kenzo on guitar, but, luckily, that wasn't taped.)vxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03692139982670743883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771329558025167888.post-73007490308044824172010-09-23T08:22:00.000-07:002010-09-23T08:33:15.844-07:00One night in Osaka<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://king-cobra.net/kingcobra.gif"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 99px; height: 102px;" src="http://king-cobra.net/kingcobra.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />We spent two days on the road, driving from Tokyo to Osaka, doing a gig at King Cobra Club, then driving back to Tokyo under the rain. Osaka, from what I've seen, is an interesting city ; the streets around King Cobra are VERY animated, with only a few cars, so I captured some "street ambient" there (I know, I said I would stop street recordings, but Osaka has a strange sonic quality, really). There were also some big oil cans just outside the club, I did some (rather soft indeed) noise with these...<br /><a href="http://punishyourself.free.fr/fieldrecordingsjapan/osaka"><br />http://punishyourself.free.fr/fieldrecordingsjapan/osaka</a><a href="http://punishyourself.free.fr/fieldrecordingsjapan/osaka/osaka.rar"><br />http://punishyourself.free.fr/fieldrecordingsjapan/osaka/osaka.rar</a> (full mp3 archive)<br /><br />I also recorded the Punish Yourself and Dead Sexy Inc gigs. Both need a bit of mastering, and I'm not really sure if they are of any interest, really, except for rabid fans ; I'll think about it tomorrow... There was also quite a lot of filming which will eventually end up on youtube at some point.vxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03692139982670743883noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771329558025167888.post-23857139060715386242010-09-21T08:31:00.000-07:002010-09-21T11:17:19.043-07:00September 22 - miscellaneous field recordingsAfter I got back my stuff, I tried to record some stuff. The place was PACKED, I can't believe they could put so much people in such a little club, and the show was a blast, even if we were very tired. Sadly, I couldn't record it, as I lost my zoom recorder (see previous post), but here's some video of the event, not the greatest video ever but it captures the spirit of the gig, I think.<br /><br /><object style="height: 344px; width: 425px;"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Zylze-NpFsI?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Zylze-NpFsI?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br /><br />The other bands were very cool, especially Gabriels Stiletto (<a href="http://www.myspace.com/gabrielsstiletto">http://www.myspace.com/gabrielsstiletto</a>), they have a HUGE sound and a very high level of musicianship ; don't know how to categorize their sound, but it's definitely dark and psychedelic. In some ways, but I may be wrong, it reminded of a very old japanese band, Flowers Travellin Band, who were some kind of insane japanese response to Black Sabbath...<br /><br />And we met some really nice people, especially Mikito and U-Tarou of Baal, I really hope we can play together at some point !<br /><br />some live pictures :<br /><br /><a href="http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/123/l_80a6ed9164554765a4632b52357a9df5.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 600px; height: 450px;" src="http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/123/l_80a6ed9164554765a4632b52357a9df5.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><a href="http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/122/l_39df1a692db9438bb3520992018c6a97.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 600px; height: 450px;" src="http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/122/l_39df1a692db9438bb3520992018c6a97.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/137/l_c829be2bff0f40dbaa72370e31961220.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 600px; height: 450px;" src="http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/137/l_c829be2bff0f40dbaa72370e31961220.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>vxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03692139982670743883noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771329558025167888.post-90721850283098639332010-09-19T01:27:00.000-07:002010-09-19T01:33:24.557-07:00Shit happens, sometimes. While returning from our first japanese gig (at Christon Cafe, a really cool place if you wanna eat but not that cool to play gigs in) I lost one of my bags in the subway. It contained my faithfull Zoom recording device, which I had used previously to record very interesting street soundscapes... The only good news is I had already transfered these to my hard drive. But the Zoom is lost and I'm very angry at myself. Hope tomorrow will be better.vxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03692139982670743883noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3771329558025167888.post-15412252447789428002010-09-17T03:09:00.000-07:002010-09-17T04:05:37.131-07:00In Tokyo, at last !<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq4xREYFuIGKSzQRol89Zv4wvFefUxVRTo09DzvawOcCgrVkwnkuhhmL2Ey7rU8EE3AV14IbYl2YXXpm-FaBJAa3J7CNTIashPwdq3piSRRgk_lNOPGr8TP0sTGEMYnWRQNYvU7mZuXBKE/s1600/IMGP3810.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 245px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq4xREYFuIGKSzQRol89Zv4wvFefUxVRTo09DzvawOcCgrVkwnkuhhmL2Ey7rU8EE3AV14IbYl2YXXpm-FaBJAa3J7CNTIashPwdq3piSRRgk_lNOPGr8TP0sTGEMYnWRQNYvU7mZuXBKE/s320/IMGP3810.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5517823813009629986" border="0" /></a><br /><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:worddocument> <w:view>Normal</w:View> <w:zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:hyphenationzone>21</w:HyphenationZone> <w:compatibility> <w:breakwrappedtables/> <w:snaptogridincell/> <w:applybreakingrules/> <w:wraptextwithpunct/> <w:useasianbreakrules/> <w:usefelayout/> </w:Compatibility> <w:browserlevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if !mso]><object classid="clsid:38481807-CA0E-42D2-BF39-B33AF135CC4D" id="ieooui"></object> <style> st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } </style> <![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Tableau Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} </style> <![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapedefaults ext="edit" spidmax="1026"> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapelayout ext="edit"> <o:idmap ext="edit" data="1"> </o:shapelayout></xml><![endif]--> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="" lang="EN-GB">From </span><span style="" lang="EN-GB">Toulouse</span><span style="" lang="EN-GB"> to </span><span style="" lang="EN-GB">Amsterdam</span><span style="" lang="EN-GB">, then </span><span style="" lang="EN-GB">Amsterdam</span><span style="" lang="EN-GB"> to Narita. And it has that funny gritty vocoder, too, sounds like shit but very noisy shit)<br />- AKG C585 mic<br />- Tascam soundcard<br />- e-bow (I'll have to ask one of my bandmates to lend me a guitar)<br />- Dementia noisebox (pretty unpredictable nasty little monster !)<br />- 2 Korg Monotrons (yeah, the monotron is a toy... but what a hell of a toy ! Killer filter to use on external sources, so easy to make it screeaaaaam)<br />- zoom H4N recording device (the ultimate weapon for field recordings)<br />- basic laptop. Didn't take a picture, even though it's quite essential in my set-up ; everybody knows what a laptop looks like.<br /><br />This is a very "basic" noise-making system, but maybe I'll buy some pedals there to add to it... We'll see.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrQaPpYsSSCWgcG3mggE2BAG-l9hTKyiLOlD6aFURLbAUrko0PbiHOFyC6FPQ7iWRvB_AgttPavycGWOWbS9gW83ksa7gJyeXDD2qz_ym1oSP5YWkEjrKdxkhPn32LAFTL9JB0CdGqyQ4q/s1600/IMGP3808.JPG"><img style="float: left; Thursday, I'll fly to Japan, for the first time of my life, taking with me some audio gear, in order to transform my Tokyo hotel-room into a home studio of sorts. I don't know exactly what kind of noise is going to be produced there, and by who apart me ; but this blog will try to document this process. I also intend to wander randomly in the city with my Zoom H4N to grab some fragments of the dense, noisy, tokyoite sonic sphere - field recordings, soundscapes, free-form interviews, recorded gigs, whatever. I'll try to post these documents on the blog if the internet connection works alright enough...<br /><br />This is not a tourist blog, not even a musical tourist blog ; it's all about how we're gonna try to create something there, or maybe just work on some unfinished songs. I'm here with my band Punish Yourself and the 1969 Was Fine bass-player ; both projects are due to work on new material, so maybe it will be the occasion... The Dead Sexy Inc will also be here, will they step into my cave ? And japanese musicians, by the way, if I find some interested...<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.komingup.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tokyo.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 800px; height: 539px;" src="http://www.komingup.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tokyo.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a>vxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03692139982670743883noreply@blogger.com1
